What is IFS?

What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

Imagine your mind as a large family, each member with its own unique personality and role. Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic model that helps us understand and address the different "parts" of ourselves. These parts often develop in response to our experiences and can sometimes clash or struggle to get along. Just like in a real family, when these parts are not in harmony, it can lead to internal conflict and emotional distress.

The Core Components of IFS

1. The Self: At the heart of IFS is the concept of the Self, which represents your core, compassionate, and wise essence. The Self is not just a part of you—it’s the true you, capable of leading and healing all your other parts.

2. Parts: In IFS, we identify and work with various parts of ourselves. These parts can be categorized into different roles:

Exiles: These are the parts that hold onto painful memories and emotions, often from early life experiences. They are usually hidden away because their feelings are too overwhelming to face directly.

Managers: These parts work hard to keep things under control and prevent the exiles from surfacing. They often have a protective function, but can sometimes become overly controlling or perfectionistic.

Firefighters: When the exiles’ emotions break through despite the managers' efforts, firefighters jump in with impulsive behaviors or distractions to quickly alleviate the pain.
